NEWS & EVENTS

Dear Parents, May has already started out busy! We celebrated birthdays, went to confession, and sent home progress reports. On Friday every student placed a red rose in a vase on the altar and the 8th graders crowned Mary. After mass we had six 8th graders from the SHCS Class of 2020, who are graduating from high school this year with the Class of 2024, walk the halls to celebrate their upcoming graduation. Our students were so excited to see them in their cap and gown. After that, for School Lunch Hero Day, our entire school stood outside on Allen Street, many students with signs, to thank Mrs. Becky and Mr. Chris for bringing us lunch every day. Our students did a wonderful job of making both of them feel appreciated, and I think we even saw a few tears on Mrs. Becky's face. At lunch we recognized our very own School Lunch Hero, Mrs. Rita, for making sure that every student in our school has a full tummy every day; she even had her own superhero cape. Our students learn many things here at SHCS, and one of them is gratitude, which is our virtue this month. Parents, thank you for sending your wonderful children to our school. Our school's 31st annual Night to Remember was Saturday night, and it is a night I will remember always. Thank you to every single person who made the night possible. We had a committee that worked tirelessly to plan this beautiful event. We had corporate table sponsors and other donors who covered most of the night's expenses. We also had many people and businesses that donated items for our silent auction. Some of the most popular silent auction items were the ones made by our students and teachers. We even had student-made artwork that was auctioned for almost two thousand dollars! Mrs. Carla will be working hard to get final numbers for us, but I am certain this was a very successful fundraiser. But, more importantly, we had over 320 people in the civic center who truly love our school. What a joy it was to see so many parents, families, friends, community members, staff, and teachers all come together to show how important our little school is. I could feel God's presence in the room and left the event tired, but so extremely grateful to get to be a part of what Sacred Heart Catholic School is, what it does to enrich the lives of everyone associated with our school, and how everything our school does supports our Catholic teachings. Thank you to each of you. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week . Food and flowers are my love languages, so our entire staff can expect lots of food and a flower or two. We would love to have you join us for morning prayer so you can spend some time with our wonderful teachers and staff. On Thursday, May 9 we have Field Day! Coach Katie has our schedule and the plan for stations ready. FMS is bringing sack lunches with turkey sandwiches instead of hot lunch. Students can eat the sack lunch or bring their lunch from home. On Friday, May 10 we are battling Pinon Hills Academy for to see which school can have the higher dollar amount of sales at Chick-fil-A . There will be a SHCS box in their dining room, and anyone who eats there between the hours of 10:30 AM and 10:00 PM can put their receipt in the box to help us earn points. Cookies earn double points! If your student would like Chick-fil-A on Friday, please remember to send $5.00. Students can also bring their lunch from home. Just remember, we will not have hot lunch from FMS on Friday, May 10. Our teachers and staff will also have a Chick-fil-A lunch and get to eat as a group, thanks to several parents who volunteered to watch classes. We will celebrate summer birthdays for the months of June and July on Wednesday, May 15. We will have our last lunch with guests on Thursday, May 16, hosted by Preschool, PreK, and Kindergarten. The theme is "Swimming into Summer" so I bet you will see lots of fish! Please bring your lunch and eat with your student as we celebrate the end of this wonderful school year. 8th grade graduation is Friday, May 17, followed by the blessing of our front rose garden, and a lunch reception for all middle school in the Family Center. Our last day of school is Thursday, May 23. We will go to Mass and students will be dismissed at 9:30 AM. Only three weeks to go! I hope you have a great week.

Dear Parents, This week didn't seem to be as busy as many of the weeks here at SHCS, but it was a special one! We had at least twelve of our students confirmed and receive their first Holy Communion yesterday in a beautiful Mass with Father Tim and Bishop Wall. Congratulations! On Wednesday, we got to celebrate Mrs. Carla Day at morning prayer to thank her for all she does for our school. Mrs. Carla truly loves our school, and it shows in how hard she works every single day. We are also getting to a lot of "lasts" with our 8th graders. They had their last pizza sale on Monday; they participated in their last Saints Bingo all week and won on Friday; they will have their last confession while attending SHCS on Thursday, and they will have their last Crowning of Mary this Friday. Next week will be their last Teacher Appreciation Week and Field Day. The list continues right up to 8th grade graduation at Mass on Friday, May 17. Their class might be small, but these three wonderful students have made a difference at our school. I'm sure you've seen our beautiful rose garden at the front of the school by the office doors; the 8th graders raised the money to buy all of the roses! We will dedicate our rose garden after the graduation Mass on Friday, May 17. We also have two other rose gardens at our school. The Groves family donated and planted the roses by the lower doors, and Tina Trujillo donated the roses for Mrs. Lange's flower bed by her classroom at the back of our school. We have five more rose gardens planned. If you would like to adopt a flower bed, here are what is available and the donation amount needed: Miss Elmer's 4th grade- $100.00 Mrs. Idzerda's 5th grade - $200.00 Outside the STEM classroom - $200.00 by the back doors leading to the gym - $200.00 and the BIG flower bed across from the STEM Lab - $600.00 All rose donors will be recognized with a plaque placed in the flower bed in thanks for the generous donation. The roses can be in memory of someone or in honor of someone. The donation amount covers the cost of the roses, soil, and mulch. Let me know if you are interested! Thank you for your continued support of our school. Saints Bingo was fun! The winners are: Monday - 4th grade Tuesday - 6th and 7th grades Wednesday - 1st grade Thursday - Miss Chavez's Kindergarten Friday - 1st grade and 8th grade Night to Remember Our school's 31st annual Night to Remember is this coming Saturday night at the Farmington Civic Center. Many people have worked hard to plan this exciting event. The night should be fun with great food, dancing, live painting, a silent auction, and a live auction of the painting and "boards." There are many wonderful items you can bid on in the silent auction, including some beautiful items that our students made with their teacher. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated their time and valuable resources to make this fundraiser possible. I hope to see you Saturday night! May Birthdays May birthdays will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 1. Progress Reports Progress Reports will be sent home on Wednesday, May 1. May Confessions Our last confession for the year will be Thursday, May 2. Friday, May 3 - May Crowning, Graduating High School Seniors, School Lunch Hero Day May Crowning will be at Mass on Friday, May 3. Our students will process in with a rose for Mary and place the rose in a vase by the altar. Our 8th graders will crown Mary. 8th graders from the Class of 2020 who are graduating from high school this year will be attending Mass with us, then walk the halls in their high school cap and gown. School Lunch Hero Day - At 9:55 AM our students line up along Allen Street so that when Mrs. Becky and the driver deliver our food, they will see our entire school outside to thank them for feeding us all year. Battle of the Schools - Pinon Hills Academy vs. SHCS at Chick-Fil-A On Friday, May 10 we are battling Pinon Hills Academy to see which school can have more sales at Chick-Fil-A. We have a very generous donor who has made it possible for all students to get a Chick-fil-A meal for $5.00. If you would like to purchase a Chick-fil-A meal for your student, will you please send $5.00 to your child's teacher by Monday, May 6? Students can still bring a cold lunch, but we will not have lunch from FMS that day. Students in first lunch (Preschool through 1st grade) will get a kids meal with chicken nuggets and an apple juice. Students in grades 2 through 8 will get a Chick-fil-A sandwich meal and a lemonade. All meals are $5.00. Taylor Whirry is creating our box that will be displayed at the restaurant beginning May 4. If you have some time on Friday, May 10 between the hours of 10:30 AM and 10:00 PM, we can have representatives of our school in the lobby and drive-through, encouraging people to put their receipts in our box. This is a great way to showcase our wonderful school to the community, and we get a food credit at Chick-fil-A just for playing! Teacher Appreciation Week Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6 - 10. Dear Parents, What a busy few days we have had! Our Walk and Roll on Wednesday was a huge success and is definitely on our calendar as an annual event. On Friday night, our first Poetry Jam was a huge success as well. We had students conquer their stage fright so they could perform in front of their peers and SHCS families. Then yesterday we completed many of our projects on our Works of Mercy Family Club service day. Our storage shed is now Coach Katie's dedicated PE storage, and our CONEX is clean and organized so that our outdoor equipment can be stored properly. All of the leaves and trash around the fence are gone, and we have a new walkway for safely getting trash to the dumpster. The irrigation pipes have been installed underground to the raised garden beds, upstairs flower beds, and flower beds by the lower classrooms; the water will be turned on this week. We have a beautiful rose garden by the lower doors and roses ready to be planted by the upper front doors. You must stop by and see the girls restroom with the motivational sayings and beautiful hand painted flowers. The boys restroom is next and it will great, too! There is no way to thank everyone by name who has made all of these projects possible; I know I will miss someone. My heart is so full of thanks to every parent, student, teacher, and staff who has worked so hard and given so generously, not just this weekend but always, to make our school beautiful in every possible way. Your dedication to and love of our school are noticed and appreciated. Thank you for every single thing that each one of you does. Last 8th Grade Pizza Sale Our 8th graders will be selling pizza one more time at lunch tomorrow, Monday, April 22. Since we have used all of the free Little Caesar's pizza cards that were donated to the school, we will have to pay for the pizza this time. Kylie Bailey was able to get us a good deal at Pizza Hut, but we are going to have to charge $4.00 for the first slice of pizza, with a drink and dessert. Each additional piece will be $3.00. 8th Grade Legacy Project The 8th graders have been selling pizza all year to fund their Legacy Project. We were able to purchase the rose bushes for the upper rose gardens with the money they raised. They will also plant a tree and other flowers that are special to them. Our rose gardens will have a plaque recognizing their generosity and thanking them for making it possible to have landscaping at the front of our school. Battle of the Schools - Pinon Hills Academy vs. SHCS at Chick-Fil-A On Friday, May 10 we are battling Pinon Hills Academy in a Battle of the Schools at Chick-fil-A. The school that has receipts in their box with the higher total amount of sales will win free food for their school. This is a great way to bring attention to our wonderful school. Dear Parents, Our students seemed to really enjoy getting to witness the eclipse last Monday. We had 2nd grade news reporters and teachers with Oreo cookies detailing the moon's path across the sun. The glasses and eclipse shakes were provided by Mrs. S and the International Appreciation Club, making this experience possible. Every student is invited back to SHCS in 2044 to witness the next solar eclipse! Rosa Schwenk represented our school at the State Science Fair this weekend and was recognized twice for her project "How Does Distraction Affect Driving?" She received Honorable Mention in Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences, and a Special Award from the American Psychological Association and Teachers of Psychology in Secondary. Congratulations, Rosa! Dear Parents, Happy Easter! I hope you are enjoying the break and that everyone comes back rested, ready for the last eight weeks of school. Easter Monday is our last holiday for the school year. Our Cross is finished and it is beautiful! Join us for morning prayer to see the cross our classes built under the leadership of Mr. Burnham, who bravely climbed a really tall ladder each morning to hang the pieces from each class. Easter Lunch and Egg Drop Our Easter lunch was fabulous. Thank you, Mrs. Atencio and First Grade, for the beautiful decorations, the precious song, and the exuberant welcomes for everyone who entered the gym for lunch. Thanks to Mrs. Isbell for the crosses for each family, and thanks to Miss Elmer and 4th grade for singing "Mary Did You Know?" Thanks, also, to Mrs. Rita, Jerilyn, Selecia, and Ms. Bean for serving everyone who had hot lunch. Finally, thanks to our guests for attending this special lunch. We love getting to show off our wonderful students, amazing teachers and staff, and our beautiful school. We had an eggcellent turnout for our Egg Drop! Many student inventions were able to make it through all three rounds of drops without their egg cracking. Thanks to the Keatings for organizing this event, and for Mr. Idzerda for getting the lift and dropping the eggs. Thanks to God for beautiful weather and low wind gusts. Re-enrollment for Next Year Almost 90% of our students have re-enrolled for next year. Two of our grade levels are already full and two more have only one spot available. Dear Parents, From Father Tim's column in the bulletin,, " Palm/Passion Sunday , we enter Holy Week, and with our entrance into it, we enter the sad, devastating days that led up to the Crucifixion of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Masses this weekend commemorated the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem, during which palm branches were placed in his pathway. This weekend begins the last week of the solemn season of Lent, preceding Eastertide. Lent will end before the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday , commemorating the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the first Holy Mass with Jesus as celebrant. Jesus is arrested on Holy Thursday night after the Last Supper. He is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, where he was praying. Good Friday : Remember that Christ died on the cross for us. Staffing for the 2024 - 2025 School Year As of today, we have a few staffing changes for next year. More changes can and most likely will happen, but these are the changes as of now: Mrs. S is leaving us to take a job as a bookkeeper at San Juan Veterinary Hospital. Amanda Henley will be taking over the library part of Bonita's multiple job duties, and we are looking to hire a part-time computer teacher. We will also need someone to help with our technology needs. From Mrs. Bonita, "So I will be trading the collar for scrubs next year. I will be working for San Juan Veterinary Hospital as their new bookkeeper. This will a huge career shift for me as I apply my bachelor’s in business administration. Not once did I think of teaching fresh out of college. I had always planned on starting off as a bank teller and work my way up the various steps of the office ladder. Then I discovered this special little rock unnoticed by many, but a gem to those to take the time to stop and look. This has been a fantastic 6 years and despite my job description of teacher, I have found myself being taught by both kids and co-workers on the very meaning of virtue. This place is truly special as every day I bear witness to this tight knit community just being themselves. Everyone always make it a point to tell me how lucky they are to have me here. I am humbly awkward every time I hear this because I see it the other way around. I just teach computers and read a book. Don’t get me wrong, both are fun. But it really doesn’t compare to walking down the hall and listening to the teaching and learning going on the classroom. I am the lucky one to have experienced this place so full of dedication, drive, hunger for knowledge, consideration and most importantly, love. I kid you not that this place is exactly like a family. In true family nature, there absolutely are ups and downs, pseudo sibling and actual sibling rivalry, but when the chips are down, students and staff render aid and pick each other up. That is why this has to be one of the hardest switches I have ever made. God shifted my course when my oldest started Kindergarten here, but he knew what he was doing then. I sure enjoyed every minute of this ride. That is why I trust Him now that I must change roller coasters. Fun fact, roller coasters are my favorite. I want to someday take a roller coaster tour across America. Anyway, I am honored in taking the next step and starting work in June for such a recognizable and respected veterinary practice in the State of New Mexico. Please say prayers for me. However, this may be a change, but not a forever goodbye. My kids will remain, which means I still have to volunteer, and as I recall, the office said double hours because they know me. I happily said yes. So, after this school year, you’ll just be seeing me in scrubs (maybe a Star Wars t-shirt). Thank you everyone for being you and God Bless." Miss Chavez will be leaving us to be a Seton Teaching Fellow, so we also have a Kindergarten position. From Alyssa, "I have been accepted to Seton Teaching Fellows, a mission opportunity that brings the Catholic faith and the Gospel to children and their families in underserved communities. I will also get to grow in my own faith through holistic formation. For the 2024-2025 school year, I will be serving in a school either in New York, Ohio, or Texas." Ms. Gapinski will be increasing her hours so that we can offer more music opportunities for our students. Mrs. Lange will be staying with her 3rd graders so that she can be their 4th grade teacher. Miss Elmer will be teaching 3rd grade next year. We are still hopeful we can add a high school, but that dream has not come to fruition yet. If it does become a reality, other shifts may occur. I will keep you informed if we have more changes. I hope you and your family have a blessed Holy Week. Thank you for trusting Sacred Heart Catholic School with your student.

Hi, Parents. As you know, communication is key to having a smooth school year. And I know my emails are loooooong, so long that there might be some parents who do not have time to read them. I am not going to change my emails because they keep me organized, but I am going to follow my long email up with one that just has information for the current week. I hope that helps! Not much has changed since my last email on Monday, so this is the only email for today. I hope you have a great week.

Dear Parents, It's Spring Break! Our school year is officially 3/4 of the way complete. Wow it has gone by fast. I hope you are having a great week with your children and that they come back to school ready for 4th quarter, which you know will be busy. Dream Vacation Raffle Drawing Thank you for selling your family's raffle tickets and for turning in the ticket stubs and money to Mrs. Carla. We had our live drawing on Friday at 4:00 PM. The winners are: Grand Prize: Ron Moore 2nd Prize: Alana Yazzie 3rd Prize: Janice Snell 4th Prize: Miranda Amoe 8th Grade Pizza Sale On the Monday after Spring Break, the 8th graders will sell pizza. I met with a supervisor at Little Caesar's and talked with her about our issues on our last two pizza days. She assured me she will be there on the 18th to make sure all pizzas are ready to be picked up at 10:30 AM. Since we have gift cards for the pizza and there is no cost to the 8th graders, pizza will still be $2.00 per slice and students who purchase pizza will still get a drink and a cookie. Thank you for supporting our 8th graders as they use the proceeds from the pizza sales for their Legacy Project. Building the Cross at Morning Prayer At morning prayer, Mr. Burnham is helping our students in building a huge cross with good deeds. If you are available this Friday, March 15 and next Friday, March 22, please come eat between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. If there are any students available, please come help serve and help with clearing the tables. I have enjoyed both Fridays that I have been able to attend, and the food is really good! Wednesday, March 27 To celebrate Easter and the end of Lent, we will attend mass on Wednesday, March 27, with music performed by our 3rd grade choir. We are still working on the schedule, but it will be very altered. We will have lunch with guests hosted by 1st grade. Farmington Schools changed our menu so that we can have a nice Easter meal that day. We will have baked ham, macaroni and cheese, garden salad, a dinner roll, and fruit. The cost is $5.00 a person which includes a drink. Please reserve your meal by 3:30 PM on Monday, March 25. After lunch, we will have our egg drop. Students can wear their regular Wednesday uniform. Night to Remember Night to Remember is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we need all of our families involved to make it a success as it has been in the past. If you or someone you know has a product or service they would like to donate, will you please let me know? Thank you for supporting this amazing event that not only raises a significant amount of money for our school, but also showcases our wonderful school to the community. Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 27 at 6:00 PM in the school. Everyone is welcome. Some of the projects already requested are to fix the blinds in some of our classrooms, complete the greenhouse, install a sprinkler system for landscaping, add landscaping, clean out our storage buildings, and clean our playground equipment. Everyone is welcome. We will serve hot dogs for lunch. If you are interested in leading any of these projects, or if you know of any other projects that could benefit our school, please let me know. Our Works of Mercy Family Club is one of the ways our students, staff, and parents have an opportunity to participate in service projects. If you still need service hours, this is a great way to get several. We will have online sign-up beginning the week of March 18. Dear Parents, This week is the last week before Spring Break and the first full week of March. It is also the third week of Lent, which means we are almost halfway to Easter, which makes it a good time to assess our progress to our Lenten goals. I found a great article on USCCB.org written by Bishop Ricken called "Journey to the Foot of the Cross." Bishop Ricken reminds us that the 40 days of Lent are a good time to work on personal discipline, and that Lent also reminds us of our weaknesses. I have messed up so many times since Ash Wednesday on my personal goals for Lent! A sweet girl brought me an oatmeal cream cake on the second day of Lent, and I had half of it in my mouth when I remembered I gave up eating sweets between meals, so I had to start over on day 2 (after I finished eating the whole thing of course; no need to waste it.) Bishop Ricken also reminds us to be patient with ourselves and that "God is calling us to be patient and to see us how He does, with unconditional love." What a blessing God's unconditional love is! There is so much love in our little school. Every day I get to be here I feel it from our staff and teachers to our students, and reciprocated from our students to our teachers and staff. Thank you for trusting SHCS with your children. They are truly another of God's blessings.
