Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy September! September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. From The Seven Dolors; Catholictradition.org,
“The purpose of the Devotion of the Seven Sorrows is to promote union with the sufferings of Christ through union with the special suffering that Our Lady endured because she was the Mother of God. By uniting ourselves with both the Passion of Christ and His holy Mother, we enter into Jesus’ Heart and honor Him greatly; He is more honored because we have so honored His Mother.” While September typically reminds us of being back in school and the promise of fall coming soon, it’s good to take time to honor Mary by meditating on the seven sorrows of Our Lady.
Labor Day is our first school holiday. I truly hope Monday is a holiday free from too much labor, and one that is relaxing for your family because the rest of this semester is going to fly by with many, many activities. As Father Tim said in this week’s letter From the Pastor’s Desk, “We are coming into a busy and joyous time starting with Labor Day, then Halloween in October, then less than a month later Thanksgiving, and less than a month after this is, Christmas! So buckle your seat belts! It's going to be quite the adventure!”
SHCS Works of Mercy Family Club
We had a pretty good turnout at our all-school meeting last Wednesday evening. Everyone worked together to come up with projects for the SHCS Works of Mercy Family Club. We will be organizing the four projects that the club will complete this year, based on the 14 Work of Mercy, and get that information out to you soon. We would love to have all our students and families participate in all four projects but hope that all our students will participate in at least one Christian Service Project.
Fundraising
Also, on Wednesday evening at the meeting, we formed groups to plan for fundraising this year. We are in the midst of our first fundraising event, which is our popcorn sales. Each student is required to sell ten bags of popcorn. Please turn in your order forms and money by Tuesday, September 11. Thanks to Michaela Martinez for organizing this fundraiser.
Next month we will have two fundraisers. The first one is at The Wines of the San Juan, and it is going to be amazing. Mrs. Carla has been working on this event so I will let her tell you all about it this week.
The walk-a-thon this year will be on Friday, October 27. Our PE teacher, Katie Derizotis, is organizing this and it is going to be a Color Run! We will send out more information in a couple weeks.
Kristin Schritter is working on a raffle fundraiser, and we will need lots of help with Night to Remember. Alexis Clark has volunteered to be the head of our fundraising committee that will oversee all fundraising events. Please reply to this email or get in touch with Alexis if you are interested in helping with any of our fundraising activities. All funds raised this year will go into our general account to be used to meet the financial responsibilities of our school.
Sacred Heart Catholic High School
Last year, Father Tim and Kami Donald began the process of looking into starting a Sacred Heart Catholic High School, and it seems it might be possible! The high school would start with 9th grade, and each year we would add a grade level until we have 9th through 12th grades. There are still lots of things to figure out, but here are the tentative plans:
School Safety
On Wednesday, August 30, we met with three FPD representatives, a representative from the State Police, the Safety and Compliance Manager from San Juan County, and the Emergency Manager from the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management. Carla and I left the meeting with lots of information, and many, many things to do to make our school as safe as it can be. Over the next few weeks we will be meeting with our safety committee and working to be able to implement their recommendations.
The Safety Committee will meet on Wednesday, September 20 at 6:00 PM in our teacher workroom. We have 21 people who have expressed interest in helping us with making sure our school is safe and secure. If you are interested as well, just let me know.
Grade Reports
Grade Reports will be sent home every three weeks, beginning with Progress Reports on Wednesday, September 6. The progress reports will have your student’s current grades in each of the subjects. We hope that you will continue to check Gradelink for individual assignment grades.
