Dear Parents,
This week
marks the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at
usccb.org:
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
Monday -
normal day
Tuesday -
Valentine's Day parties in classes and Free Dress - Students can wear any clothes they would like to school. They do not have to wear uniforms or spirit wear, but clothing should be proper school attire of course!

We requested meatless meals from FMS on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Marie Johnson and her staff were happy to create a meatless menu for us. On Wednesday, hot lunch will be grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, and on Friday we will have fish sticks with macaroni and cheese. We will also send home Progress Reports on Wednesday.

Friday -
We will be on our Wednesday schedule with regular uniforms, but no Spanish classes. We will have
Stations of the Cross at 2:30.
Robotics Competition
Congratulations to our Robotics team who competed in Albuquerque on Saturday at our first state level competition. The team of Rosa Schwenk, Blake Richardson, Alan Niedhardt, Yareli Estrada, Lily Schwenk, and Boston Mohon did an excellent job of representing our school. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Idzerda and the parents who took the kids to Albuquerque and made sure they had fun, were well-fed, and had an overall great experience. We look forward to growing our Robotics program and going back next year to win!
Accreditation Survey
Thank you to the 22 parents who have completed the survey that begins our accreditation process. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, will you, please? Here is the link:
Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey as soon as possible.
First Reconciliation
Congratulations to the SHCS students who received their First Reconciliation on Saturday. There was a lovely Penance service and some very holy children with proud parents in attendance. Special thanks to Mr. Dan Burnham and Miss Alex Burnham for preparing our students, and to Cathy Montoya, Father Tim, and Father Jeff for a very special program. Our students are ready for Lent!
Dream Vacation Raffle
Thank you to everyone who is selling their Dream Vacation raffle tickets. All ticket stubs and money are due on Friday, March 1. We will have the drawing on Friday, March 8 during a livestream on Facebook. We still need volunteers to sell tickets at Sacred Heart and at St. Mary's next weekend. Will you please let the office know if you are able to sell tickets at one of the masses? We also have some color-printed flyers with all of the raffle information printed on them that were donated by Brandon and Ashley Mohon. If you would like some to give out to your friends, stop by the office or let us know and we will send some home with your kiddo.
Night to Remember
Planning has already begun for Night to Remember, which will be Saturday, May 4. We had 15 people at our meeting Wednesday night, which was led by Kami Donald. There were many, many wonderful ideas that were discussed, and this year's event looks to be fabulous. Please let the office know if you have any ideas or if you want to help in any way. An event of this size requires everyone's help in planning so that everyone can enjoy this truly amazing evening.
Child Safety - Protect Yourself Training for Students
Our school is required by the diocese to train every student in how to protect themselves in physical boundaries and safe touching. On Monday, you will receive a note from your child's teacher about this program. On the back of the letter is a form that we are required to have signed by a parent for every student. Parents can choose to have their student opt-in to the training or can choose to have their student opt-out of the training.
Will you please decide what is best for your student, then sign and return the form by Friday, February 16?
Training for the students who are opted-in by their parents will be held during the weeks of February 20 - 23, and 26 - 29.
Tiny Saints
Miss Chavez nominated our school to win a free Tiny Saint for every student and t-shirt of our patron saint for every staff member - a prize valued up to $10,000. All we have to do is get as many votes for our school as we are able. The school with the most votes will have the highest probability to win this great gift to help their teachers and students grow in devotion to their patron saint.
The voting window closes February 22nd at midnight, and the winner will be announced on February 23rd.
Mission with Ryan Tremblay
Beginning on Saturday, February 24, Sacred Heart Parish will host a mission with Ryan Tremblay, a touring international Christian recording artist. He will be at all masses and will also have special evening presentations at 7:00 PM on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. On Tuesday, February 27, Ryan will work with our students in grades 3 through 8 who would like to sing with him, beginning at 8:15 AM for instruction, then a performance at 10:00 AM for the entire school. At his 7:00 PM performance, our students who sang with him that morning are invited to perform with him that evening. Father Tim met Ryan in August while on his trip to Portugal. You can learn more about Ryan on his website at ryantremblaymusic.com
Works of Mercy Spring Project
Our second big project for our Works of Mercy Family Club is to complete small projects around our school on the weekend of April 20 and 21. Dr. Grandjean, our STEM representative, is busy securing the materials we need to complete our projects. As we get closer, we will send more information. For now, will you please be thinking about what projects your family would like to help with that weekend?
Lunches with Guests - Save the DATES!
To celebrate Leap Year, we will have lunch on Thursday, February 29 with families. Hot lunch that day is a yummy baked chicken drumstick, green beans, roll, and fruit. Our students love this meal. The cost is $5.00 for guests and that includes a drink. Please reserve your lunch by Monday, February 26.
To celebrate Easter, we will have lunch on Wednesday, March 27. As we plan, I will provide more information.
Parents, as always, you are welcome to join us for morning prayer and weekly mass. Thank you for trusting SHCS with your children.
❤️, Kelly
